Caesalpinia pulcherrima (code: CAES0001)
poinciana (en), pride of Barbados (en)
- Family: Fabaceae
- Wikipedia: LINK
- Morphology: Leaves alternate, bipinnate, with 7-10 leaflets per sub-rachis.
- Determination notes: Caesalpinia pulcherrima is very similar to Delonix regia, but has fewer leaflets per sub-rachis. A spreadsheet from Zaven gave one of the species planted in Freetown as Delonix regia, but iNat gives three dets of Caesalpinia pulcherrima and no Delonix regia. I (Cam, 2022-01-16) am going with Caesalpinia pulcherrima as the common taxon planted in Freetown. // Note also that some of the seedlings have tags saying 'African wattle' which is Peltophorum africanum. However, P. a. appears in all online photos with a mucronate apex to leaflets, but CAES0001 does not have this, and better matches images of C. pulcherrima. 2022-01-26: Confirmed, with appropriate uncertainty, by Marco Schmidt.
